Visual Journal

It is a place where you feel safe to play, practice, explore and dream without judgment

Here are answers to some of the most common questions asked about Visual Journaling:

What is the purpose of a Visual Journal?
It is a personal guide or road map that you create for your life’s journey. It is a place where you feel safe to play, practice, explore and dream without judgment.

What is the difference between a Visual Journal and a regular journal?
A Visual Journal combines words, pictures and color to help you express your innermost thoughts and feelings. Many times when you can’t find the words … a picture can say what you are thinking or feeling.

Is it always called a Visual Journal?
If you are not comfortable with the term Visual Journal, you can call it a sketchbook, guide, roadmap, navigator or whatever makes you feel comfortable. It is really not important what it is called, but rather that it provides a place for you to feel safe exploring.

Do I need to be creative or an artist or to have a Visual Journal?
A Visual Journal is not about art…it is about the process of taking an inner journey to learn more about yourself and your intentions. Some pages may be artistic, but that is just a side benefit, not the purpose of a Visual Journal.

Do I need a certain type of book to make a Visual Journal?
There are many options for a Visual Journal; it can be wire or perfect bound book with blank pages (not lined). You can buy them at many Art or Craft stores. You can also make your own journal by putting blank pages together and creating a cover out of heavy paper, leather, or vinyl.  Many people use old books and just paint or gesso the pages so they have a blank page to start. Use whatever you prefer.

Do I need expensive supplies to use in my Visual Journal?
You can use very inexpensive craft paint or high quality acrylics to get color on the page. You may want some stamps to create headlines, or simply use markers to draw attention to certain words. If you have some expensive art supplies and have never used them… go for it, have fun and play with them. However it is not necessary to have high quality art supplies for this process.

Where do I get pictures and other materials to use in my Visual Journal?
Magazines, newsletters, postcards, photographs, letters, notes, newspapers or books are all great resources. Keep your eyes open and collect materials anywhere you see something that captures your attention. It could be keepsakes that you collected while on a trip.

How often and how long do I need to work in my Visual Journal?
Like anything in life, the more you practice something the more proficient you become.  It is not necessary to spend hours on your journal every day, but if you can spend as little as 2-20 minutes every day or 4-5 days a week, you will start to see that you “want” to spend time with your journal. It is your opportunity to get to know your inner self and explore your goals or purpose in life.

Why would I want to keep a Visual Journal?
A Visual Journal provides a record of where you are and where you are going. It is a place to get all of those things that are in your head down on paper so you can see them and decide what you want to do with them. It is your own private place to be your authentic self.
